Brunch @ Baan Ying : your go-to for a Thai-riffic weekend semi-buffet spread @ Royal Square Novena

The Great Baan Ying Brunch #TGBYB

Launched on 26 January 2019, Baan Ying offers popular Thai favorites with choice of one main course along with a buffet spread of 12 to 15 delectable appetisers, sides and desserts on rotation every week. Priced at $38.80++ per adult and $19.40++ per child (four to ten years old; kids under three dine free; child price includes a complimentary fruit juice), The Great Baan Ying Brunch is worthy of a Saturday or Sunday out, especially when a free-flow of beer and wine is available at a top up of only $29.80++ for the entire brunch duration from 11am to 3pm!

Founder “John” Songsorn Junsunjai and his mother Aunty Ying, started in 1999 at Bangok’s Siam Square, to its current ten outlets in prime locations in Bangkok now. For the Thai food addicts, you might have already tried Baan Ying in Bangkok! Now John has brought his Thai family recipes right up our Singapore shores so lets dive right in to what we tasted at #TGBYB.

  1. Angus Beef Steak (approx. 150g) (additional $9.80++)
  2. Bone-In Iberico Pork Chop (approx. 250g) (Recommended)
  3. Pan-Fried Salmon Steak
  4. Grilled Large River Prawns (Recommended)

Bone-In Iberico Pork Chop – Thick cut with generous portions. Pork Chop was not dry at all and so juicy and terrific!

Grilled Large River Prawns – Prawns were super fresh and succulent, de-shelled them easily. Taste was refreshing.

Moving on to the DIY Thai salad – Nam Prik, diners can mix & match to create their version of a perfect salad. Make your own Som Tum (Green Papaya) or Yum Mamuang (Green Mango) salad with Aunty Ying’s secret salad dressing.

Sides on the buffet spread include…

Mini Larb Moo Tod (deep fried spicy meat balls mixed with toasted ground rice, mixed herbs and lime juice)

Kai Jiew Koong ( Omelette with Shrimp & Onions)

Yum Pla Foo (Crispy Fish Flakes with Mango Salad Dressing) – light crisp and fluffy tasting, it tasted like the usual flour/egg crisp bits on top of a usual fish soup dish. Surprised to know this is made from pure fish flakes. Was not oily at all, and a pleasant dish with the mango salad dressing cutting the taste with a tangy addition to the texture.

Kiew Krop Na Tung (Crispy Wanton Skin with Pork and Shrimp Dip)

Kiew Krop Na Tung (Crispy Wanton Skin with Pork and Shrimp Dip) – Very delicious. The dip is at room temperature and complimented the Wanton Skin well. Would have loved it more if the dip was kept warm!

Mu Tod Nga (Baan Ying White Sesame Pork) – slightly dry, moistness could be improved.

The dishes are on rotation every week,  so it adds some mystery and spice to the dishes you’d be tasting the next time you come back.  Dishes include Mu Pad Kiem Chai (Stir-fried Pickled Cabbage with Pork) – my favorite of the lot, Yum Woon Sen (Glass Noodle Salad), and Pad Prew Wan (Thai Style Sweet & Sour Chicken).

As for the drinks, we ordered one of their Signature Butterfly Pea Tea with Lime ( $4.80++), and a good old coconut because what completes a Thai meal without slurping up a refreshing coconut juice?

Overall, a really spacious and beautiful interior, unlike the usual Thai joints. The natural sunlight shining into the restaurant makes one feel so relaxed and it is a nice place for families to enjoy the weekend brunch together. Jot this on your calendar and make it down one of the weekends 🙂
